The offering of sacrifice is fundamental to all forms of folk magic. Essential in the gift giving, reciprocal nature of magical work, the forms of sacrifice are many and varied. Sacrifice is made to the land, to the spirits that are indwelling in place, to gods and to our beloved dead. They remind us of our ongoing connection and our reliance on forces greater than us.
The art of sacrifice means to make sacred. In the act of making sacrificial offering the gift is made sacred. The burning of incense, the lighting of a candle, the laying of flowers are all sacrificial offerings. In making sacrifice we address the balance between ourselves and the field, keeping us in right relationship with the kingdoms of life around us.
